This section deals with the use of PlastiSpan insulation for
the design of ceiling and wall insulation above grade. In many
buildings, walls present the greatest area through which heat
transfer may occur.
Insulation thickness is selected
on the basis of economics, taking into account the capacity
and cost of heating or cooling equipment, and the cost of
the energy to run it. The obvious effect of rising energy
costs has been to promote greater insulation thickness. In
many instances, construction methods have been modified to
provide for the extra insulation thickness needed for higher
thermal resistance in walls, ceilings, floors and roofs.
The thermal resistance required
in any building will vary depending on the climatic conditions
in the area. Plasti-Fab representatives can provide an analysis
of thermal resistance for any required construction. PlastiSpan
insulation has the lowest cost per unit of thermal resistance
of any rigid insulation.
PlastiSpan insulation is
a combustible material that is permitted in noncombustible
construction as described in Articles 3.1.4.2. and 9.10.16.10.
(Protection of Foam Plastics) of the National Building Code.
In most cases, a thermal barrier is required over PlastiSpan
insulation. When used in building construction covered under
Part 9 of NBC - i.e., buildings of 3 stories or less in building
height, having a building area not exceeding 600 m2 and used
for major occupancies classified as residential occupancies,
business and personal services occupancies, mercantile occupancies,
or medium and low hazard industrial occupancies - the wall
finish must be mechanically fastened to the supporting assembly
independent of the insulation.

applicable to PlastiSpan insulation.
