Interior Basement Walls

PlastiSpan Insulation can save up to 30% of your home heat loss through basement walls.

  1. Follow the Building Code
Be sure to check the National Building Code of Canada or the applicable building code in your region regarding minimum insulation, framing and vapour barrier requirements.

  2. Start From A Corner
The wall surfaces must be clean, dry and free of foreign materials and sharp projections. Starting from a corner, attach PlastiSpan insulation to the basement wall using an adhesive compatible with expanded polystyrene insulation.

  3. Measure and Cut
Measure and cut PlastiSpan insulation with a utility knife or fine tooth hand saw such as a keyhole type or drywall saw to fit openings such as windows.

  4. Application to Basement Wall
PlastiSpan insulation should be tightly butted together. Joints should be no wider than 1 mm. You can ensure this by applying adhesive between the boards.

  5. Frame the Wall
Construct a separate wood-framed wall installed in front of the PlastiSpan insulation to support 1/2” thick gypsum board. The vertical framing members should be at least 2” x 2” spaced at 16” or 24” on centres.

  6. Install the Wall
Fasten the framed wall to the upper floor joist and to the basement floor leaving a small gap between the insulation and the back of the framed wall. Electrical wiring can be placed within the frame wall by running wiring behind the framing in the small gap behind the framing and using shallow electrical boxes.

  7. Attach Gypsum
Attach 1/2’’ thick gypsum board to the face of the frame wall.
