The Insulspan Structural Insulated Panel (SIP) system consists of performance rated oriented strand board (OSB) structurally laminated to a core of insulation. Insulspan SIP provides building owners with a proven method of constructing walls and roofs resulting in real energy cost savings while adding resale value to the building. Insulspan SIPs use closed-cell rigid EPS insulation cores which helps reduce air leakage and thermal bridging by providing a continuous layer of thermal insulation in both wall and roof assemblies.

The Insulspan SIP System is a versatile building system that can be used in application such as Single-Family Residential, Multi-Family/Multi-Use Residential, Commercial, Community Buildings and ADUs (Accessory Dwelling Units).

Insulspan Structural Insulated Panels with EPS Cores are available in the following thicknesses:

  • 4 ½ - R 15
  • 6 ½ - R 22.6
  • 8 ¼ - R 29.2
  • 10 ¼ - R 36.8
  • 12 ¼ - R 44.4

Insulspan R-Plus Structural Insulated Panels with NEOPOR Cores (GPS) are available in the following thicknesses:

  • 4 ½ - R 18.3
  • 6 ½ - R 27.7
  • 8 ¼ - R 35.9
  • 10 ¼ - R 45.3
  • 12 ¼ - R 54.7

Material Properties of Insulspan® SIP System

The Insulspan® SIP (Structural Insulated Panel) System is an energy efficient building system consisting of a PlastiSpan® insulation core with oriented strand board (OSB) structurally laminated to the interior and exterior faces. PlastiSpan insulation is an expanded polystyrene (EPS) insulation manufactured to meet ASTM C578, Type I, Standard Specification for Rigid, Cellular Polystyrene Thermal Insulation, and CAN/ULC-S701, Type 1, Standard for Thermal Insulation, Polystyrene, Boards and Pipe Covering.

Note: The thermal resistance (R-value/RSI-value) and thermal transmittance (U-factor) values above are for an Insulspan SIP only at a mean temperature of 75 °F (24 °C) and do not include panel framing or connection material, interior/exterior cladding or finish materials and interior/exterior air films.

Insulspan SIP wall and roof assemblies require fewer framing members than conventional wood frame construction resulting in energy efficient building construction with higher overall thermal resistance (lower overall thermal transmittance). In addition, air leakage is one of the biggest sources of energy loss in most buildings. Air leakage rate and overall thermal resistance (or thermal transmittance) are measures used to determine the energy efficiency of building construction. Significantly lower air leakage rates are achievable for energy efficient buildings constructed using the Insulspan SIP System.

The combined higher overall R-value/RSI-value and lower air leakage characteristic for building assemblies built with the Insulspan SIP System results in significant long-term energy cost savings versus other construction methods such as wood frame construction.

The Insulspan® R-Plus SIP System is an energy efficient structural insulated panel (SIP) system consisting of an EnerSpan® insulation core with oriented strand board (OSB) structurally laminated to the interior and exterior faces. EnerSpan® insulation is an expanded polystyrene (EPS) insulation with a silver-grey colour manufactured using Neopor® F5300 Plus provided by BASF. Neopor F5300 Plus is a graphite-enhanced expandable polystyrene (GPS) raw material that reduces radiation heat transfer resulting in EPS insulation with a higher thermal resistance compared to standard white EPS insulation.
